At the monthly poetry reading in town that I run, performing
"Trance Poetry" where I recite one of my poems in cadence to a beat that was
created specifically for it. I end up actually fitting the words and
phrases between the beats. If everything goes well it forces the audience to
listen to the beat with one side of their brain, and listen to the words
with the other side. This causes a strange and compelling sensation, somewhat
like when you defocus your eyes to better see motion.
Our a capella singing group at the Willits interdenominational Christmas sing. We were the first
non-church group to join this wonderful event. Our Episcopal church choir sort-of instigated
this. Emendal is an open choir ranging from beginners to professional musicians. While our
technique can be a little fuzzy at times, our joy and energy more than makes up for this in
audience appreciation. We sing a variety of genres from classical to African freedom songs. Our square dance group, The Frontier Twirlers, in a slight blur of action. We are the only
rural small town group that I know of that dances A1 and A2 (advanced dance techniques). One of the few photos of my playing boules (Petanque), the classic French game from Provence.
As the photographer I seldom get in the picture. The basics of the game are simplicity itself.
You take turns throwing hollow metal balls about the size of a softball as close to a marker as
you can. The closest ball wins. There are incredible subtleties to this game. I think this was last Thanksgiving - a whole family effort. I and Emile
are most visible. Heather is largely lost in the shadows. More photos and more color next month!
