How To Meet

About to meet for the first time

my great-grand nephew and niece

Slightly frantically searching

for something anything anyway

any props to bridge the gap

We are on the road visiting

so have nothing nada to show

What to do? Just be available

and wait for them to show the way

Me playing at 90 percent kid and

when adult just a rugby referee

At first shy and not there kinda hiding

I soon squat down to their height

and waited to be accepted as willing

to fall into step with their-sized world

They liked my open-ness and so we fell into fun

Whatever they did, I pushed it beyond

not beyond safety, not beyond do-able

Beyond, a little Stretching to grow a little bit

Me doing the cheerleader from the side

a most appreciative audience of one

One of those adults who understands

So we ran, we jumped, fluted all, funning

with wild abandon and broke nothing

Kids are always ready for fun with adults

if they know how to wait for the invitation
